Vancouver, enroute to Bella Bella

Just north of the Canada/US border and facing the Pacific Ocean, Vancouver is the largest city in British Columbia, Canada. But BC's capital is elsewhere, not far away.

Vancouver's a waypoint for us on the journey to Bella Bella, in northern British Columbia, an Indian band village so remote it has no cellphone or Internet connection outside the immediate environs of the village. Salmon and halibut, and the prospect of catching thereof, are why we're journeying to Bella Bella and so why we're in Vancouver.

Our 100 year old hotel, actually a backpacker hostel in ancient livery, is well located, very cheap, a little noisy if you, like us, have a front room, but clean.

Less than five minutes' walk away is Gastown, adjacent to the port and the convergence point for all means of transport except the latest, the jet airliner. But you can hop a floatplane nearby and head off for a scenic flight.

Tomorrow morning we leave from Vancouver airport’s South Terminal for the one hour flight north. Hope the salmon and halibut are biting.

Canada, 2011

Having skipped travelling in 2010, we had a big year in 2011. This was the year we took an iPad for the first time and started posting to our blog. My second trip for the year was to Canada on a jaunt with two old friends who were keen as I to sample the salmon fishing in British Columbia. We travelled by Air New Zealand from Brisbane to Vancouver return. For much of the time in the remote wilderness we had no Internet connection but as soon as a WiFi connection was available I was able to update the blog from accumulated material on the iPad.
